OUR EXPERIENCE: When a patient is discharged home, other than advice on rehabilitation services and future doctor's appointments, families are often left to face the vast unknown alone. And without a compass to guide them, families don't know what to ask for or where to look. 

 

Like countless others, the Watkins family spent considerable effort looking for community programs and services to help meet a need. We chased down one lead after another; many passed by word of mouth. It was arduous, time-consuming, and especially thwarting when it led to a dead end.

 

A low percentage was appropriate for Matt's needs, available, or covered. Medicaid eligibility was often a requirement for which Matt did not qualify. From our perspective, this seemed like a form of reverse discrimination since equivalent programs and services weren't available using his health insurance or private pay. 

 

An encouraging grassroots initiative in New York is asking the state legislature to include a $1 million investment in a Continuum of Care for Resource Facilitation for brain injury survivors in the Executive Budget. That would be a great resource. Until that time, I have listed agencies and services I found along the way. I hope they will give people a head start and save a few steps.  Read more
