A mother, physical therapist, and woman of faith raises her son again

This is his story, my story, our family's story . . . . .

Our story provides a recounting of my son Matt’s road to recovery: the triumphs and the tribulations. Perhaps more importantly, it also provides a deeper look into the underpinnings of Matt's successsix years of hard work, perseverance, and a mother who wouldn't give up. Since his traumatic brain injury (TBI), Matt has made immense strides toward living an independent and fulfilling life. I hope sharing this information will help aid others wherever they are along their journey.

In conjunction with conventional rehabilitation such as Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy, our family has been deliberate about the interventions we have enacted at home and in the utilization of community resources. In reality, the story hasn't always been pretty, and not all treatments have been successful. And what has worked for us may not work for someone else. Brain injuries are complicated, and everyone's experiences are unique.  It has been a balancing act for us to maintain realistic expectations while still striving for what once seemed so impossibleMatt's dream to become a professor again.

I am writing a book about our experience. Not knowing if or when I will ever finish it, let alone get the book published, I have opted to roll out sections on this website as they are written.  I invite you to join my family as we look back and reflect on what was and just how far Matt has come. It is a time to celebrate and redouble our efforts toward his goal of becoming a college professor again.
