Payment for transportation services may include:
Travel to hearings: The Social Security Administration (SSA) can pay for transportation to hearings, including bus tickets and driving expenses. You can request payment at the hearing or soon after.
Transportation to work: You can use work incentives to set aside money for transportation to work. You can also use money from an ABLE account to pay for transportation.
Transportation to medical appointments: You can receive payment for transportation to medical appointments after you fill out a form and provide receipts.
Vehicle purchase: You can use a Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS) to purchase a vehicle or cover transportation costs.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
Covers transportation only in certain situations.
Part A may cover emergency transportation services, and Part B may cover transportation if deemed medically necessary to get to an emergency facility.
Generally, it doesn't cover expenses for a routine trip from home to your doctor.
Medicare Advantage plans
Some plans cover a limited number of Uber and Lyft rides for transportation to and from doctor's appointments and other health-related facilities. Coverage depends on what plan you have.
Check your plan for potential extra transportation benefits.
Medicaid
Covers the cost of emergency medical transportation such as ambulance rides or medical flights for eligible individuals.
An emergency is when your medical needs are immediate.
The NYS Medicaid Transportation program
Ensures Medicaid members can get to and from their medical appointments at no cost to them.
Lyft Concierge
Organizations and caregivers can schedule and pay for rides on behalf of an individual, most often to attend medical appointments.
Lyft’s non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) partners with health systems, health plans, and transportation brokers.
Lyft Assisted: offers riders a little extra help. The driver meets the rider at the front door of the home or facility and offers light assistance — lending an arm, elbow, or hand, opening and closing doors, or storing small personal belongings. (Available in select markets.)
